 The Soldiers Project

Do you know a soldier who is back from service and is having trouble returning to civilian life?

Do you know someone who is a family member or friend of such a soldier?

Up to 30%  of returning soldiers come home with issues serious enough to cause difficulties with adjusting to civilian life.

Family members and loved ones frequently have great difficulty coping with those problems.  Symptoms can last a lifetime.

The Soldier's Project is a free counseling service for returning soldiers, their families and loved ones.    No insurance is needed.

All services are free and confidential.  There is a 24-7 hotline.

Project RHINO - Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans
Would you like to help people who need a home? Join us when we schedule our next RHINO trip to New Orleans.  Watch this website for information when we schedule our next trip.   If you  would like to support this mission financially, you can put your contribution in the special envelope in the pew rack and label it RHINO.
Our Mission in New Orleans  After hurricanes Rita and Katrina our Church wanted to be of help to the people of New Orleans .  Learning of the RHINO project of the St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church , our members began going to New Orleans in small groups to work with them.
On our first trip we worked gutting houses for those who were unable to do it themselves.  This allowed the owners to see if their homes could be saved. On our subsequent trips we have been building new homes on a street called Ferry Place.  In this RHINO project St. Charles has partnered with Habitat for Humanity in the hopes of building 14 new homes on a Pension Town Neighborhood street which was devastated not by flood but by poverty and neglect.  Much progress has been made in rebuilding the city, but there is so much left to do.
As of May 2010 the Ferry Place Project has been completed and St. Charles' Rhino program is planning a new phase, Project Renew Green Street.  Once again they will partner with Habitat for Humanity to construct three new homes a few blocks away on Green Street.
On our last trip, this past May we began the week cleaning out the last of the 14 Ferry Place homes in preparation for it new homeowners and helped clean out the supply container before its move to another Habitat site.  The rest of the week we worked on another Habitat home in the same neighborhood.
In the last three and a half years we have witnessed and been part of the transformation of a street, the lives of 14 families and the resurrection of the city.  To date we have sponsored 6 trips to New Orleans sending a total of 18 individuals, some more than once.  We have been joined by friends and members of a neighboring church.  We have been inspired and changed by the courage and faith of the people we have met, both the residents and the others who have gone to help.  We look forward to our next trip.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

Since 2001 our church has joined other churches and community organizations in working with the all volunteer Wantagh Unit of the Salvation Army for the Holiday Bell Ringing Campaign.  It is this campaign that raises the major portion of the funds that the Salvation Army uses for its programs during the year.

Being a bell ringer means standing by a Salvation Army red kettle at a local supermarket and thanking people when they contribute money.

Adults are welcome to be there by themselves or share it with a partner, while teenagers should always have a partner or even a third friend along.  Shifts may be one or two hours at a time, between 9AM in the morning and 8PM in the evening.

You  make a difference when you become a bell ringer.  This Christmas make a gift of your time that results in help for the needy.

For more information contact Maria Studer at 516-579-8790.  Just say yes to Bell Ringing.
